Celebrate Life Summit

Krystal and I are always excited about sharing how much a simpler life is a happier life! We know that there are so many people out there who are just exhausted from trying to “Keep up with the Joneses”! Our goal is helping them understand that they don’t have to! We put our heads together to come up with a way to share our passion with everyone. Our thought was that there are many people who could use some help and encouragement in living a healthier, simpler life. This thought became something big and exciting...we’re calling it the: “Celebrate Life Summit

We'll post updates here on the site, plus on our FB page! Feel free to contact us if you have questions or want to get involved! We'd love to hear from you! We're so excited!

Celebrate Life Summit - Day 7 - World

posted Feb 18, 2012 6:43 AM by Shawna Cevraini   [ updated Feb 18, 2012 6:46 AM ]

Today is the final day of the Celebrate Life Summit! It has been a whirlwind of activity! Krystal and I are so grateful for the outpouring of support and love as the week has progressed. We've made new friends and gotten re-acquainted with old ones.

It has been so rewarding to feel like we are helping people find out about the resources that all of us need to be healthier and make a difference in our own backyard. Doing something local affects the World in our opinion.

Today, we have a special treat for you...a story from Lesley Winfield from the Olds Municipal Library about the journey of a newcomer to our town. A story that is like so many others. The World is arriving here in our little town...let's take the time to find out more...

Cindy steps off the plane into the Calgary Airport with an air of excitement surrounding her. The journey from the Philippines has been a long one, but as she brushes past the other people disembarking from the plane she knows this is the chance she needs, a chance to make a better life for her family. Her heart twinges as she thinks about her children, 5 and 7 who are left behind. Maybe one day they will join her. Taking a deep breath she pushes forward and is greeted by a customs agent. Everything goes off without a hitch and her new employer is there to meet her at the airport.

It’s February and as she steps outside her breath is sucked from her lungs in shock. She had been told it would be cold, but how could it be this cold? The snow is slowly drifting down around her and her the thoughts of freezing melt away. This is the first time Cindy has seen snow and she’s amazed! How exciting. If only her kids were here to share this! The smile hasn’t left her face since she arrived and she’s looking forward to exploring this strange new country and the town she’s traveling too. A man is standing there with a sign. It has her name on it. She looks at him and tries to give a sweet smile. In her country it's tradition to hug when meeting but she was told it might not always be welcomed where she was going. She holds back. He's on the phone and he holds up his finger.

"give me a sec." he says

Suddenly Cindy feels like she's forgotten something. What does he want me to give him? What is a sec? Did I forget to fill out some paperwork? what if they send me home? She looks around to see if anyone else has something that she doesn't have, but sees nothing out of the ordinary. Soon he is off the phone and motions for her to travel. He must have forgetten about the sec. She would have to be sure she found out what that was as soon as possible.

The doors slide open and a rush of frigid air covers here skin. She had been told it was colder here but she had no idea it would be this cold. Her coat was thin and her bare hands became numb very quickly as they walked to the waiting car. She soon forgot about the inability to feel her fingers because snow began to drift down from the sky. She stopped and looked up. She had never seen snow. It was so beautiful! She watched as it touched her skin and melted. If only her kids could be here to see this!

The rest of the trip was fairly uneventful. She arrived at her new home and was shown to a room. There were three other girls sharing it with her. How lovely she thought, people to keep me company. They smiled and greeted her. After a short introduction she found that they too were from the Philippines and had just arrived a few weeks ago. Well isn't that a stroke of luck, she thought, some people who understand me. She starts work tomorrow so she unpacks a few of her belongings into the drawer she's been designated and drifts off to sleep.

***

It's been five months since she's seen her family. She has tried to contact them but the phone is so very expensive here. She is happy to share her home with so many friends that she has now come to think of as family, but it's just not the same. She misses her children. She was lucky enough to borrow a computer the other day and use Skype for a call, but this only seemed to make her miss them even more. Maybe when she saves up enough she can buy a computer of her own? For now her focus has been sending money home for her family.

It was a long day today. A lady at the restaurant had complained about her service. She had tried so hard to understand what she was being asked for, but the lady was using words that she had never heard before. She was sure the lady was speaking English but the accent had thrown her off. She had found out later that the lady was asking for "tea" not "tay". Why did she have to get so upset? What if she was sent home?

She hugged the picture of her children to her chest and drifted off to sleep as a tear rolled down her cheek. Tomorrow would be a better day she told herself.

***

This story is based on the true story of someone I met here in our community. She's moved on to the city now and I'm happy to say she has fully immigrated and was able to bring her children to Canada just this summer after two years. This was a representation of some of the real situations that immigrants and temporary foreign workers face when they come to our country. Many of them are so grateful to have the opportunity to come to our country they will face difficulties without saying a word for fear that they may displease someone and be sent home. We are fortunate in our community that these types of things don't happen, but some temporary workers face great hardships at work including poor pay, poor living conditions, and having to work more hours than they should. Most are too afraid to say anything because they don't want to displease their employer, who has the power to send them home.

I have heard of countless people who have come on a Temporary Foreign Worker program with the hope that they will be able to stay and one day bring their family to live with them. Some will even go for 2-3 years without seeing their family, in the hope of one day providing them with a better life in Canada. Think about it, would you leave your children behind for three years? The biggest thing that people coming to our country need is support and friendship. People to help them practice their English. Someone to show them where the grocery store is. Someone to help them find the doctor's office. Ultimately someone to call a friend.

In Olds we are lucky to have a wide range of people from many cultures around us. In fact not all newcomers are visible minorities. Some have come from European countries and you would never suspect they weren't born in Canada until you talk to them. Some have lived here for several years and some have just moved in. Alas, a lot of times we're too afraid to befriend them because we are afraid of offending them. "What if they're Canadian Born?! I better not ask." We assume people will be offended if we get it wrong. The truth is this simply isn't the case. While some people may in fact have been born in Canada, most people don't mind if you ask them because in the end, people like interaction with others. To someone who has just moved to the country it can mean the difference of deciding to stay and giving up under the pressure and going home. Much like when we travel there is an initial excitement. Like going on vacation. When you get there everything is new and fun. However, after about a month reality starts to set in. The number of adjustments that need to be made can be too overwhelming for some. If they can get past the initial "chaos" phase of their adjustment many end up finding great success in their new life. However, if it all becomes too much and they don't have the support to help them through it, they may just give up and go home.

The reality of our situation in Canada is that our birth rate is continuing to decline. In about 15 years time there will be a huge portion of the population retiring or unable to work. In the end, someone has to fill those positions. We simply don't have the workforce ourselves. We NEED people to move into our communities and help us. The fear that people will take jobs from Canadians simply isn't justified.

Also, I can't stress enough the importance of making these people feel welcome in our community. They need help finding things, they need things to fill their new homes, and most of all they need friends. For example, some of them have never been through winter and don't own a winter coat. Some have never walked on ice before. Simple things that we take for granted can mean a world of difference to someone trying to make a life for themselves.

Don't get me wrong. Not all newcomers are struggling to get by. In fact there are very strict guidelines as to how much money they have to have in the bank before they are allowed to come, but have you ever tried to find and furnish a whole apartment in a matter of months? However, we are fortunate to live in the community we do. There are very dedicated employers bringing in TFWs and for the most part they are taken care of. Proper housing is provided and furnished for them. Some of the businesses in Olds even provide transportation for their workers. We also have some great organizations offering services. Mountain View Community Adult Learning provides ESL tutors and matches people up with community volunteers willing to help. The Library provides free internet access, a Skype room, and ESL materials and software. A group of organizations providing services formed a "Welcoming and Inclusive Communities Committee". This group provided courses such as winter preparedness sessions, Safe Harbour Training for the community, and Welcome to Olds guides translated into multiple languages. The churches in town host parties celebrating different cultures and allowing newcomers to get involved and share their culture. Isn't it great to live in such a fantastic community! This is exactly what is needed if we want newcomers to become fully engaged members of our community. Every single newcomer I've met has been extremely excited to share, volunteer, and help out where needed. All that is required is to get to know them and ask.

So next time you see someone you've never met before. Whether they are a visible minority or not, why not say hello? Get to know them. You may be surprised what friends you make just by saying hello. Who doesn't need another friend?

Married with Luggage: Travelling with Your Spouse

Warren and Betsy share some tips on travelling with your spouse. They've been travelling the world together (stay tuned for Day 4 Simple Living video from these great folks!)

Here are a set of tips you can share from our experience traveling together the last 15+ months.

  1. Take turns being the boss and making the decisions on a long trip. Switch off the responsibility of checking into hotels, finding transportation, deciding on activities/restaurants, paying for things, communicating in a foreign language. If one person has to do it all the time he/she will resent having to do all the work to have a good trip, and if the other person never does it she might resent not getting a say-so. Alternating means everyone does a little bit of work for the fun and that each person gets a chance to make the decisions. Especially on a long trip this can be a lifesaver.
  2. Be more polite than usual. Being together 24 hours a day can test anyone's nerves so remember that your loving partner is not in your head and able to see the kindness and love that exists there while you are being less than gentle with a request. Be mindful of how you are talking to your mate and throw in an extra "please" or simply an "I love you" ocassionally. It can go a long way to easing the tension and ensuring you will not need to search out a divorce lawyer while seeing the world.
  3. Clear the air quickly. Problems are absolutely going to arise whether you are on the road for a week or a year. Issues are going to come up and how you deal with them is going to mean the difference between vacation bliss and domestic nightmare.
  4. Be emphatic, banish timid. If you really want to do something do not be shy. Your mate, however great they are, cannot read you mind. When you are traveling there is bound to be times when you all want to see different things. Compromise is king here, as we have all learned. However, compromise has a limit. If you really want to see something/somewhere and know you will regret missing it if you don't then tell your partner so. Let your partner know why it is so important. The last thing you want is a simmering stew of "you screwed up my vacation by not letting me..." which reaches boiling at a later point. We have mastered this particular one and it has saved more than a few fights over the last 15+ months.
  5. Know your partner and do not try to force them into uncomfortable situations. Everyone has a different idea of fun - from hiking, museums, spending time with groups of children, jumping from a perfectly good plane. Each of these activities may be fun to you but could be beyond the real of merely "challenging" to the point of pure terror for your beloved mate. When you go on a trip know your own limits, but be respectful and aware of your mate's limits as well. If the idea of spending a day with children will drive your spouse to the point of screaming insanity, realize this and give up on the notion of volunteering at a school for a month. If a fear of heights causes your mate to pee uncontrollably, waive off the need to force them to join you on your once-in-a-lifetime sky dive.

Celebrate Life Summit - Day 2 - Nutrition Wrap Up

My brain is so full! We had an excellent learning day for Day 2 of the Celebrate Life Summit!

Judy Patry and Rick Kohut gave us so much information about eating healthier! In the morning, we learned (and got to eat!) how to make two quick and easy breakfast recipes. The Greek Quinoa salad was simple to prepare and was delicious! Then we had Rick's Rockin' Hummus spread on tortillas with vegetables to make a fantastic alternative to sandwiches. Dessert was a homemade pudding made from young coconut and real chocolate! We sampled some easy to make no-bake cookies that just happened to be packed full of healthy ingredients. Green tea accompanied the meal for yet another healthy bonus. The food was incredibly good and oh, so simple to make! On top of all that, it was really healthy!

The evening seminar continued with more helpful information. We learned about the WOW Weight Loss program from Judy Patry that does not involve a diet, just healthy choices in eating and exercise. Kelly Amboe gave us great tips on meal planning and even had everyone creating a simple plan! Rick Kohut talked about what the #@$@ is in our food! We wrapped up in the day in the grocery store with a tour of food labels!

Don't forget this Day 2 online video and resources found here: Celebrate Life Summit - Day 2 - Nutrition

We have a lot of video for today. I'll be adding it to this page as I get it edited!

Day 2 of the Celebrate Life Summit brings us to Nutrition. We are really excited to share a video interview that we had with Kristen, the Frugal Girl.

Kristen (aka The Frugal Girl) tells us the story behind how The Frugal Girl blog got started with her Food Waste Friday posts. Learn how writing out a meal plan and tracking costs can help your family save money. Kristen has lots of ideas on eating healthier on a budget - with a family of six! Her weekly food budget is currently $100 US!

Krystal and I have used meal plans and know how much it saves money. Both of us are inspired by Kristen! We love to read her blog as well, so sign up to catch the Frugal Girl emails and Meet The Frugal Girl! (Kristen)

There are still a few spots available for today's events:
  1. Lunchtime Demo 11:30 to 1:30 Olds United Church - Judy Patry and Rick Kohut will show us some ideas for quick and healthy lunches on the go!
  2. Healthy Eating One Bite at a Time 6:30 to 9 Olds Elementary School - Judy Patry, Rick Kohut and Kelly Amboe will share lots of meal planning ideas and then we'll go on a grocery store field trip and learn how to read labels!

Both events will have a ton of information and will be a lot of fun. Get your tickets online here: Lunchtime Demo and Healthy Eating One Bite at a Time or get your tickets at the door. We're looking forward to this!
